On September 10, 1939, Canada's declaration of war against Germany became official, and Canada found herself propelled into yet another world war. This photo shows a Canadian soldier outside the West Block on Parliament Hill. The Lee-Enfield Mark 1 rifle dates from 1902 and was first introduced into use in the Canadian army in the First World War. The young soldier's presence was more symbolic than necessary: the real war for Canada was fought in Europe, as it had been in 1914.
