In 1935 Bennett was forced to call a general election which most people suspected he would lose. In the previous two years, almost all of the provincial governments had gone to the people, and all had been defeated. Eight out of the nine provincial governments, indeed, were now Liberal. In this cartoon by Lavoie of the Liberal newspaper Le Canada, the wealthy Bennett is depicted as an unemployed man asking for a handout of votes from passers-by. Bennett was overwhelmingly defeated in the general election of 1935, and King and his Liberals won the greatest electoral victory in Canadian history up to that point - 173 out of a possible 245 seats in the House of Commons. In Quebec, the Conservatives won only 2 out of 65 seats.
