Small partially sunken icebergs make a growling noise as wind and water grind them together. Schooners had to proceed slowly and carefully through these to avoid damage. Most of these schooners were constructed in the various harbours on the northeast coast with the hulls of local spruce at least two inches in thickness. Still, the ice was dangerous and had to be treated with respect.
