On April 4, 1914 the Bellaventure, carrying seventy-seven dead sealers (another died later) and the survivors from the Newfoundland disaster, arrived in St. John's with her flag at half mast. The Bellaventure, of 466 tons, built in 1909, was one of the oldest of the ironclads while the Newfoundland of 568 tons, built in 1893, was one of the older wooden walls.
