The heavy line extending from St. John's to Cape St. John delineates the approximate area from which the Newfoundland Labrador fishermen came and the heavy line between Blanc Sablon and Cape Chidley represents the area to which the Newfoundland fishermen migrated. Most of the stationer fishermen came from Conception Bay, while the floaters came from the more northerly ports. Similarly most stationers fished on the southern Labrador coast - very few ventured as far north as Cape Harrison - although the floaters fished the whole coast going north to Cape Chidley.
Major Seal Harvesting Areas. These areas are known in Newfoundland terminology as the "Front" and the "Gulf" for obvious reasons. Certain sealing captains who primarily hunted on the "Front" were known locally as "Northern men" while those who usually hunted in the "Gulf" were known as "Southern men." Today the Gulf hunt is limited to landsmen while the "Front" is hunted by Canadian and Northern ships and by landsmen on a quota system.
