This barge, owned by the Canadian Salt Fish Corporation, is a self-contained floating fish plant, the only one to be built so far in Canada. It was anchored at Smokey in 1975. The Corporation bought fish from the fishermen who came from the northeast coast of the Island to fish from their longliners during the season. Men hired by the Corporation processed the catch which was then salted in bulk until the Corporation was ready to market it. Note the coasting vessel which is unloading salt and loading fish.
