This is the most northerly of the few remaining summer fishing stations on the Labrador coast. Although never as important as its nearby neighbor, Indian Harbour, Smokey was always the centre of a fairly substantial fishery within an area of 20 to 30 square miles. Three crews, each consisting of a fisherman, his wife and a young shareman fished here in 1975. Note the section of bawn behind the buildings. This bawn is unusual in that it was made over a long period by taking the rocks which were used as ballast in the schooners and bringing them ashore to cover this rather marshy area and thus create some bawn.
