The missionaries attempted to establish self-sustaining communities. The southerners were not accustomed to a diet deficient in vegetables and so gardening became a necessary occupation. The short growing season was somewhat offset by the hours of daylight although their attempts were never entirely successful. This potato garden was at the Fort Good Hope Roman Catholic Mission on the Mackenzie River just eight miles south of the Arctic Circle.
