Dawson had a resident photographer named Duclos whose photographs imaginatively recorded the varied activities of the new town. He photographed elaborately staged theatrical events in the local theatre, the townsite, and all the activities of the town and the surrounding countryside. Many of these photographs are in the collection of the National Museums of Canada. His portraits of the ladies of the north are sophisticated and sensitive. This amusing photo of "hardworkers" betrays the wit that marks his work. The streetscape suggests the extent to which the frontier town resembled those southern towns which were the model to which new communities aspired.
