"Femmes de Boer faisant le coup de fusil" (The War in Transvaal, Boer wives under arms), Le Monde IllustrÄ, 16 dÄcembre, 1899, p. 520. This picture captures a contrary perception, the French Canadian vision of the war. Like the previous slide, this is based on a picture distributed after the war began but illustrates the heroic view which characterized the pro-Boer literature: women and children rallying loyally to the defence of their homes and country, sharing their men's adversities and choosing death rather than surrender.
