This picture, reproduced in several Canadian and British papers, ridicules the Transvaal Republic's president, Paul Kruger, and his claims to constitutional legitimacy. The president, a simple, God-fearing republican who usually wore a plain green sash as his only insignia of office, is pictured here as a dictatorial creature dressed in imperial garb and surrounded by timid, compliant messengers. The yellow press normally potrayed Kruger as a cruel crafty man who drank four gallons of beer a day and who ruled over a horde of dirty, black veldt farmers, all in all a degenerate lot, corrupted by Uitlander wealth.
