The Conquerors of Canada, A Checklist of Early Music Relating to Canada. This picture captures the spirit of self-confidence engendered by the war. English-speaking Canadians returned home more confident of their own virtues in war and peace, an optimism buttressed by the tremendous economic expansion which characterized the first decade of the twentieth century. As their own frontiers became safer they equated their military might with their economic strength. Scornful of the waste and worthlessness of a standing army, they nevertheless reformed and expanded their militia. The Boer War strengthened their amateur's view of warfare and reliance upon their own strength. To these new warriors, it seemed, belonged the 20th century.
