This picture shows the ship Laurentian, leaving Halifax in January, 1900, carrying a quarter of the troops of the 2nd Canadian contigent. But these men despite the title of their contingent were not horsemen. They belonged to the Artillery, a battery of which won considerable praise from their exacting British superiors. They were subjected to far less official pomp and circumstance than their comrades of the first contingent. After a brief speech from the Minister of Militia, (never a particular treat) they sailed away on a cold, damp, grey Halifax winter's day, cheered only by the small crowd of curious spectators who had come to watch.
