To halt further defeat, the British re-organized and adopted the tactics of their opponents early in the new year following the December disasters of Black Week. Rather than expose themselves to the withering rifle fire of mobile, camouflaged Boer troops, they began to use the defensive advantage of the land as exhibited in this picture. Naturally, the disciplined well-trained British Regular found it more difficult to adapt to the new warfare than the untrained, unorthodox colonial who knew no other methods, thereby placing a premium on colonial troops.
