The realities of war from which cabinet decisions often seem remote are only mildly evident in this newspaper sketch. The handsome soldier bidding goodbye to the beautiful lady betrays the romantic attitude to the war encouraged by imperialist propaganda. This was a common stereotyped pose found on many posters and post cards advertising the Spanish-American War and later the first World War.
