Not all Vancouverites lived in the genteel surroundings of the Hotel Vancouver. Just one mile to the east near Dunlevy and Pender Streets, a scattered collection of houses, stumps and outdoor privies made for a raw, bleak environment. When it rained, mud was everywhere.
