This photograph of Howe Street taken from the Hotel Vancouver indicates the development since 1887 in the more prosperous western sections of the city. Roads have been improved, sidewalks constructed and houses built. Even the vacant lots have been cleared up, and the total impression is clean, orderly and tidy. Tennis was still a game for ladies and gentlemen and there's little doubt that the C.P.R. wanted an aura of solid respectability for their hotel. Later a small bandstand would be added.
