Here early Toronto (termed "York" from 1793 to 1834) looks rather like an early twentieth century bush camp in Northern Ontario. Within a decade of its founding in 1793 the population of "York" was greater than that of the entire Credit band (which numbered about 300 persons around 1800). How do you explain the rapid increase in the white population, and the sharp decline in the Credit Mississauga's numbers (in the late 1780s they had numbered over 500)?
