  3.      The advance of capital intensive mining operations. At the top is an early hand-operated hoist. The hoist raised the ore to the surface and carried or lowered the men to the mine levels. In the centre is the hoist room at the Le Roi mine in 1896. Below, the hoist room at Le Roi eight years later.
