This photograph shows us the first processing stage for cotton when it arrives at the mill. The raw cotton comes in 500-pound bales (on the right) most of which have been shipped from the southern United States. The machine dries the cotton and removes dust and other impurities. On the ceiling you will notice the belts and numerous line shafts required for this machine. These belts, found in most of the workshops, were the cause of many accidents.
