This is the shop where Marie works. Fabric is woven on the looms with a shuttle that interlaces the cotton threads as it moves back and forth. Marie's job consists of feeding the thread and making sure that the looms operate properly. This is the final process at the Valleyfield mill before the cotton is bleached and dyed. A photograph cannot portray the heat and humidity in the shop which was supposedly required for smooth operation of the machines. Marie finds the noise of the hundreds of looms operating in the shop deafening. She is paid at a piece rate according to the amount of fabric produced by her looms.
