The concept of Canada as a multicultural nation was given substance by the distinguished careers of men such as Andrew Shandro. Shandro, who came to Alberta in 1898, was the first person of Ukrainian descent to become an M.L.A. Once ethnic groups began to participate fully in Canadian economic and political life, they articulated their desire to preserve their cultural heritage within the framework of Canadian citizenship.
