These battered Jewish refugees were the victims of violent religious persecutions in Russia in 1903. Aided by private international relief organizations these Kishenev Pogrom survivors came to Canada. In spite of their humble beginnings as 'peddlers and tailors', Jewish immigrants and their offspring often achieved rapid upward social mobility. Although they were for the most part urban immigrants, some of them were settled on farms by the Baron de Hirsch society in order to meet Canadian immigration requirements. The group in this photograph have just been treated in a Quebec hospital prior to being moved west for settlement.
