The self-reliant character of the Ukrainian immigrant is evident from this picture. With a minimum of tools and conventional building materials these Ukrainian settlers were able to build shelters for themselves and their livestock. Here a house frame of poplar and willow is being plastered with mud. The roofs were usually sodded or thatched.
