The most recent general works on the period are Canada 1896-1921 - A Nation Transformed, by Robert Craig Brown and George Ramsay Cook (The Canadian Centenary Series. Toronto: McClelland and Stewart Limited, 1974), and Canada 1874-1896 - Arduous Destiny, by P.B. Waite (The Canadian Centenary series. Toronto: McClelland and Stewart Limited, 1971). Norman Macdonald's Canada: Immigration and Colonization, 1841-1903 deals exclusively with the specific issue of settlement. These three volumes provide other bibliographical references to specific themes such as transportation, and general economic questions. The most thorough work on francophone settlement in Western Canada is Donatien FrÄmont, Les Franìais dans l'Ouest canadien (Winnipeg: Edition de La LibertÄ, 1959). Arthur Silver's article, "French Canada and the Prairie Frontier, 1870-1890", appears in the CHR (1969), and the two viewpoints on French-Canadian emigration in the 19th century by Gilles Paquet and Albert Faucher are in Recherches Sociographiques (Sept.-Dec. 1964). Among other useful sources are J. Howard Richards and K.l. Fung (eds.), Atlas of Saskatchewan, The Beaver, Les Cloches de Saint-Boniface, and the Introduction ê l'Ätude des Franco-Manitobains - Essai historique et bibliographique, by Lionel Dorge (Saint-Boniface: La SociÄtÄ Historique de Saint-Boniface, 1973). Newspapers are a precious source of documentation, especially Le MÄtis, Le Manitoba, La LibertÄ, Le Patriote, and Le Courrier de l'Ouest.
