This unidentified photograph, circa 1895-1900, clearly shows the terrain which had been home to many French and Swiss settlers in the late 19th century. Farmers from these Alpine regions had to adjust to different agricultural techniques and a radically different environment. Think about it. How would Canadian farm implements differ from those in the photograph? Would water be as abundant on the prairies as from mountain sources? Could fences be constructed on the bald prairie? Would prairie homes have basements and stone foundations?
