Dressed in hard hats and overalls, these miners are working several hundred feet underground in narrow galleries. One of them has his hand on a rock drill. Working conditions underground are difficult. The noise, the humidity, the cold or heat and the unbreathable air shorten a miner's working life. By the time he is forty years old, a miner has often ruined his health.
