In early May, after the strike had dragged on for some time and the company had resumed production, the exasperated strikers took militant action. They overturned cars, dynamited the company railway and fought with the police and strikebreakers. The newspapers reported the violence in different ways. The May 6 issue of Le Devoir stressed the police brutality and the arbitrary nature of the arrests. On the other hand, The Gazette issued the same day, stressed the strikers' brutality, the bloodshed and the disrespect for law and order. The regional weekly L `Asbestos related the facts without taking sides, although it, too, stressed the disorder and violence.
