Brutality and violence flared up when the employer resorted to the use of strikebreakers. The company had, moreover, requested police protection for these new employees. Feeling themselves to be directly threatened, the strikers decided to interfere in order to bring production at Johns-Manville to a halt. Here we see them trying to block the road with a truck in order to stop the "scabs" and keep away the provincial police. The miners seem determined, even though they are armed only with tree limbs, chair legs or rocks. Women are supporting their husbands and participating in the action.
