Trois-Rivieres, 1784, E. W. Greir from an original drawing by Ensign J. W. Peachey.
Founded in 1634 where the St. Maurice flows into the St. Lawrence, this first centre above Quebec remained a village during the French regime. even though the Forges de St. Maurice, the colony's iron workings, developed nearby. After the Conquest, however, some incoming English-speaking merchants added to its business life, and the iron foundries were enlarged. Although the place grew, it still was little more than a stopover port between Quebec and Montreal.
