Much of the wealth of Quebec was inthese booms of square-hewedtimber along its river margins, shown here above Cape Diamond.Not until the 1870s when sawnlumber for American markets, and iron steamships took over(neither of which Quebec was well-placedto provide) would the great days of the city's timber trade andwooden shipbuilding pass away.
