Cottages of this sort, for the regularly employed workmen, were already fairly typical of smaller dwellings in the city by the fifties. The transient labourers or the hopelessly poor lived in mean shanties or shared one small dilapidated frame house with several families. Yet much of the urban working class owned individual homes with gardens and lived interspersed through most parts of the city.
