As immigration spread settlement westward across Upper Canada, whole new towns were planned and built - this one at Goderich on the shores of Lake Huron. Laid out by the Canada Company, which held large tracts of land in the south-western Ontario peninsula, it was to be a veritable port-capital of their holdings. It was some time before Goderich actually emerged as more than a frontier settlement yet present-day Goderich has at its centre this interesting radial plan with streets spreading from the hub.
