This photograph, taken in the late 1880's, of the riders on the W.W. Stuart ranch near Calgary shows the cowboys in true working costume - wide-brimmed hat, neck-scarf, shirt and vest, and protective leather chaps (chaparajos). The almost universal appearance of the cowboy in the cattle country on either side of the border manifests the functional character of his dress and its adaptation to the cowboys' working environment.
