His position as a minority shareholder and western manager of the vast North West Cattle Company, mainly owned by the Allan Steamship people of Montreal, underlines the frequently observed linkage between Montreal capital and practical stockraising experience from the Eastern Townships, and serves further to demonstrate the importance of the role played by this older part of Canada in the foundation of the western range cattle industry. Stimson is also important, quite apart from his subsequent prominence in western ranch circles, as he typifies the kind of man sent west to manage western ranches during the company era. By virtue of their cultural and educational backgrounds, the managerial staff of the western ranch companies were simply a transplanted part of the eastern managerial class. The Canadian range was never in the hands of "wild and woolly" Westerners, either American or Canadian.
