Though not of the same standard as the accommodation of their employers, the cowboys' quarters were very often a cut above the homesteader's sod or frame shack. The bunkhouse was a permanent home only between November and April when the cowboys' tasks were confined more closely to the ranch headquarters. Cowhands on many ranches spent much of the summer on the range under canvas or the open sky. The dog appears to find the bed quite comfortable.
