This man is an itinerant basket pedlar, selling vegetables in 1898 to residential buyers in and around Vancouver. Many truck farmers at this time marketed their own produce. Later farmers took one of two directions: either they sold their produce directly to canners, wholesalers or retailers, or else they themselves gave up the farming end of their business and entered marketing exclusively. The old-time basket pedlar pictured here was part of an urban scene; in the rural areas Chinese vendors used wagons or junks - Chinese sailing craft - to carry their produce to the buyer.
