The customs and ceremonies which the Chinese brought to Canada were at once new and colourful. Many residents of towns with Chinese populations found ceremonies like this funeral feast a welcome diversion, but others looked upon them as heathen celebrations, and called the Chinese subvertors of the Christian order. To harrass Chinese who wished to send the bodies of the deceased back to the ancestral soil for burial, whites advocated laws against the export of the bones of dead animals. Others harassed Chinese who smoked opium, even though the British had introduced opium as an article of commerce into China.
