Shown on the map are the routes taken by Chinese and Japanese emigrating from Asia. Most went to Asian lands, but a significant number journeyed over the Pacific Ocean to North America. The first Chinese came in search of gold, and followed the trail of the gold rush from California to British Columbia. They encountered utterly strange men who, in the words of Stanford Lyman, "spoke an innintelligible language, dressed in odd, tight-fitting clothes, ate great chunks of beef and pork with potatoes instead of rice, and had fair, even pale skins which bronzed only in the heat of summer."
