Not even the railways that the stiffs built remained as a monument to them. The National Transcontinental, the Grand Trunk Pacific and the Canadian Northern were colossal failures which had to be nationalized, and some of the track torn up within a few years of being laid. In 1917 the army construction crew shown in this photograph collected steel needed for the war effort.
