Reading Camp Association tents, such as this one pitched on the CN line in British Columbia in 1911, did much to relieve the monotony of the stiff's lives. A man working at an NTC camp in 1911 spoke for many itinerants when he appealed to the Association's headquarters for supplies, "We are all pretty lonely these long nights and would like something to read;...if you can get the books you will help us out a lot."
