Gambling was a popular pastime among the stiffs. Professional "card-sharks" took jobs on the grade simply to ply their trade in the bunkhouse. Even though they were illegal, a few comparatively elaborate gambling houses graced tar-paper towns. Missionaries railed persistently against this "problem" and sought with little success to teach the men frugality. In this photograph a group of itinerants on a spree hold an impromptu crap game in a BC town.
