This man, resting after a day on the grade, was one of the unskilled workers who built the railways during the years of 1896-1914. The stiffs migrated from job to job across the country, packing only their blankets on their backs. Though ignored during their time and since forgotten, such workers were basic to Canada's rapidly expanding economy; at the height of the boom 50,000 of them were engaged in railway construction.
