Toronto's Union Station, Canadian Illustrated News, 1852.
The railway station pictured here on the top was built in 1852 by the Grand Trunk Railway. Below it is the Northern Railway freight office. These facilities were soon inadequate for the growing industrial centre of Toronto. In 1872 the Union Station, pictured below, was built at a new site which allowed for expansion, in 1906, to the present facilities. A company was formed to build the Union Station and stock was issued. It was obvious to Torontonians from the outset that railroads were to be a part of their cityscape.
