This was the first locomotive manufactured in Ontario. Like all early locomotives, it had a name, not just a number. In this case, it was named after the city in which it was built. Others were named to honour prominent people or places. These early locomotives burned wood, loaded in the tender behind the engine from piles located every few miles along the track. Sometimes even the passengers were called upon to give a hand in loading the wood. The smoke stacks had screens over them to prevent sparks from setting fire to nearby forests. Note the `cowcatcher' at the front. It was designed to remove debris from the track.
