This major engineering accomplishment, finished in 1854, represents the significant technological strides made during the age of railways. This bridge over the Niagara River made it possible for the Great Western to link with the New York Central Railway and, by means of the New York Central, with a great section of the United States. Many hoped that such connections would divert valuable trade from the mid-western United States into Canada.
