As the canals made water transportation more feasible, the demand for ships increased. Several shipyards grew up in Kingston and Toronto. Augustin Cantin's works were the largest in Canada. Hundreds of workers were employed here building several kinds of vessels, including steamboats and their engines, for forwarders along the St. Lawrence-Great Lakes system. Some of Cantin's ships were sold to foreign buyers.
