"Along the Kingston-York Post Road", by James Cockburn.
The early settlers of the St. Lawrence-Great Lakes region built their homes and villages in isolated patches along the waterways. Since lake vessels were expensive and horses were scarce, travel between these communities was limited. The time and effort involved in walking the great distances between settlements discouraged people from travelling very far from their homes. The commercial interests and the military establishment needed better transportation facilities to move goods and men. These two groups, together with the government, would give impetus to the developments in transportation which would take place in the period 1828 to 1860.
