Much of the prospecting in the area was done in the winter months when the swamps and forests were more passable and dog teams and snowshoes were a common feature of travel. Also shown is a small part of South Porcupine (usually referred to locally as South End), where many of the prospectors congregated. The ramshackle buildings hardly seem adequate for accommodation during the severe winters. Newcomers to the goldfields from southern Ontario often were appalled at the length of the winters. When asked when summer would begin, one prospector reportedly answered, "Don't ask me, mister. I've only been here two years."
