Gold was discovered throughout a region over thirty miles from the nearest railway, and bringing supplies over the generally swampy country-side was extremely difficult in summer, as one can see from the photograph taken at what is now the town of Timmins. If heavy machinery had to be hauled in the summer, corduroy roads (made of logs laid across the roadbed) were sometimes made, but most freight brought into the region before the coming of the railroad was transported in the winter, after the freeze-up made the roads passable.
